Two hours???<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">Motivated by nothing but a thirst for knowledge and a quest for the truth, <strong>DepQu\u00e9bec<\/strong> has put together a first-of-its-kind shopping test: <strong>The Milk Race!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">The idea is to buy a pint of milk in two convenience stores and two supermarkets, stopwatch in hand, and simply measure the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">The aim is not about knowing which will win (because we know deep in our hearts that our beloved depanneurs will) but to what extent depanneurs truly succeed in saving their customers&#8217; time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">The rules we have followed are very simple:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">Park as close to the entrance as possible without spending an hour looking for a place;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">Start the clock once the car door is locked and stop it once back to the car;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">Buy one pint of 1% or skimmed milk, preferably the same type but not necessarily (we could have opted for a six-pack of beer but our budgets are limited &#8230;);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">Avoid rush hours, like around 3 PM.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>1) COUCHE-TARD : <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">FIRST WITH 1:30 SHARP\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103922\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103922\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-103922 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/stationement-couche-tard1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/stationement-couche-tard1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/stationement-couche-tard1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/stationement-couche-tard1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/stationement-couche-tard1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">The main factor reducing purchase duration is the premises size: at Couche-Tard, you park right in front of the entrance door. You are at only 10 feet from the inside. And there&#8217;s always room to park. First, the car is at least 40 feet from the entrance, but more likely 100-150 feet. So just reaching the entrance can easily take 20-30 seconds.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103940\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103940\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103940\" src=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/maxiinterieur1b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/maxiinterieur1b.jpg 800w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/maxiinterieur1b-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/maxiinterieur1b-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/maxiinterieur1b-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">Once inside the Maxi, you&#8217;ll have to cross the equivalent of a football field back and forth, all for a pint of milk!<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103943\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103943\" src=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/lignerapmaxi1b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/lignerapmaxi1b.jpg 800w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/lignerapmaxi1b-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/lignerapmaxi1b-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/lignerapmaxi1b-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">There is an express line (8 items or less) but the friendly clerk who works there must also take care of bottle returns and tobacco purchases, so much so that her line often ends up being slower than regular ones. <span class=\"\">Besides, we had time to go get a pint of milk at the back of the store and come back to find that the queue has not moved a bit since we came in.<\/span> <span class=\"\">We therefore decided to take another line &#8230; and hopefully help <strong>Maxi<\/strong> to look better in our test!<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>3) IGA EXTRA (SOBEYS) : FOURTH WITH 6:20<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103949\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103949\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103949\" src=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igaparking1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igaparking1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igaparking1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igaparking1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igaparking1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">At IGA, same as Maxi for parking, but with even more cars to bypass. And when you are in a hurry, you realize all the details that you won&#8217;t see normally. For instance: holding the entry barrier to help a customer with a cart: 5 sec! There is no grocery cart in convenience stores!<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103952\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103952\" src=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igalaitdanslefond1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igalaitdanslefond1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igalaitdanslefond1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igalaitdanslefond1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igalaitdanslefond1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">As with <strong>Maxi<\/strong>, the dairy section is really in the far back corner of the store, as if the supermarkets completely ruled out any attempt to compete with convenience stores on the speed level.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103955\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103955\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103955\" src=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igacaissiere1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igacaissiere1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igacaissiere1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igacaissiere1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/depquebec.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/igacaissiere1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">And that explains why IGA came fourth: we stumbled upon a clerk making a deposit &#8230; this often happens in supermarkets, but never in convenience stores! At least 45 sec. lost here.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\">In conclusion, the convenience stores we visited asked for one-and-a-half minute on average of our existence when buying a pint of milk while supermarkets took five minutes more on average for a similar transaction. <span class=\"\">This is a significant difference and, of course, under the best conditions for supermarkets since traffic was low.<\/span>\u00a0During rush hours, who knows how long it could take to buy a pint of milk in a supermarket,\u00a0<span class=\"\">while the risk of congestion at the convenience store is minimal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\">Mr. Bouchard is quite right: everything is designed in a convenience store to help customers save time, and time, as you all know, <strong>is nothing but convenience!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The founder of Couche-Tard, Alain Bouchard, likes to repeat that &#8220;convenience stores&#8217; most important product is time&#8221;.
