Super C is Metro‘s banner of discount supermarkets. It is in direct competition with Loblaw‘s Maxi and Maxi & Cie while Sobeys has no presence in this segment.

This type of supermarket places little emphasis on decoration, equipment quality and accessories, layout and presentation of goods. It limits the service to a minimum (no packer at the cashiers) as the declared goal is lowering prices as much as possible. Prices are actually cheaper on average than higher-end supermarkets and rebates are generally more numerous and generous.

The number of Super C stores is very stable. Sometimes, in some very competitive or low growth markets, a Metro will be rebranded to a Super C, as was the case in Matane in 2016 (source: Radio-Canada). To the extent that employees can accept less generous working conditions, the conversion may better serve a more saving conscious clientele.
