The Select<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>brand is a corporate convenience store banner operated by Sobeys Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong><\/a> and associated exclusively with Shell<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span>In 2011, Shell<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>announced the sale of its Select<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>service station network to Sobeys<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for an undisclosed amount (Source: La Presse<\/a>), following the closure of its Montreal refinery. <\/span>The transaction included a portfolio of 250 gas stations including Select<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(corporate) and other Shell<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(franchised).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, there has been no visible synergy or convergence of the Select<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>network with Sobeys<\/strong><\/a>‘. It still\u00a0<\/span>relies heavily on the strength, notoriety and attractiveness of the Shell<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>brand, with little emphasis put on Select<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(ditto for Petro-Canada<\/strong> and its Super Relais<\/strong> convenience store brand… a name just for the sake of it). <\/span>Moreover, the consumer must go through the Shell<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>website – not the Sobeys<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>site – to\u00a0find gas stations locations and get more information.<\/span><\/p>\n

Type of Franchise<\/span><\/h4>\n

Like most Couche-Tard<\/strong><\/a> or\u00a0D\u00e9panneur du Coin<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>stores, Select<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>service stations are partly operated in the corporate mode and partly franchised by Sobeys Qu\u00e9bec<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>The latter, however, owns most of the buildings, land and equipment (source: Les Affaires<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n
