The March\u00e9 Express<\/a><\/strong> banner (named\u00a0On the Run<\/strong> in English Canada and in the U.S.) consists of 100 corporate service stations in Quebec affiliated with Esso<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and owned by Imperial Oil<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as of the Fall of 2016. That’s when\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span>sold its distribution network in several pieces to various retail chains across Canada (source: Radio-Canada<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, 50 service stations were sold to\u00a0Alimentation Couche-Tard<\/strong><\/a> in the Montreal area, all of which are top-quality sites, and most of which have Tim Hortons<\/strong> and\/or car washes. <\/span>The March\u00e9 Express<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0banners of these stations have quickly\u00a0been replaced by the Couche-Tard<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0banner.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another group of 36 stations went to Harnois Groupe P\u00e9trolier<\/a><\/strong>, which seems to be keeping the March\u00e9 Express<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0banner for now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The remaining 14 stations are likely to be in the hands of Parkland Fuel Corporation<\/strong><\/a>, which also purchased the On the Run<\/strong> and March\u00e9 Express<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0trademarks in Canada plus about 100 supply contracts across Ontario and Quebec (in the U.S., there are 300 convenience stores On the Run<\/strong>\u00a0selling Mobil gas and these\u00a0are owned and operated by Couche-Tard<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0since 2009).<\/span><\/p>\n

But even though Imperial Oil<\/strong><\/a> sold its entire retail and distribution network, <\/span>it has secured its\u00a0gas sales volume\u00a0through long-term supply agreements.<\/span><\/p>\n

The March\u00e9 Express<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and Esso<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>gas offering almost always include a car wash. <\/span>In addition, a partnership with Tim Hortons<\/strong> was concluded to open 175 restaurants within the On the Run \/ March\u00e9 Express<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0network that also comprise Royal Bank<\/strong> ATMs. <\/span>According to the company, this strategy of creating hubs of well-known brands is highly attractive to\u00a0customers and is a proven winning formula (source: Ccentral.ca<\/a>). <\/span>Following the sale of its network, the company said:<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Esso<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>brand will not disappear, and the stations will be operated on a branded wholesaler basis, as is already the case with many of our stations across Canada (the branded wholesaler is the company that owns a<\/span>nd operates the station and is supplied with fuel from Imperial Oil<\/strong>, owner of the Esso<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>brand). It is the brand-name wholesaler that manages the current operations of the Esso<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>stations and the traditional blue oval is here to stay.”\u00a0<\/span>– Imperial<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Type of Franchise<\/h4>\n

The March\u00e9 Express<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0service stations with Esso<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>are operated under a concession model in which the franchisee owns the inventory while the franchisor owns gasoline, real estate, land and equipment.<\/span> Both parties receive compensation through a system of sales commissions and rental fees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
