Provigo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Provigo Le March\u00e9<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0represent the two major Loblaw<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>supermarket banners in Quebec, the others being discount supermarkets\u00a0Maxi<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and Maxi & Cie<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The acquisition of Quebec’s Provigo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in the 1990s by Toronto-based Loblaw<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>led to\u00a0some marketing hesitations\u00a0and back-and-forth decisions over the next two decades. At the beginning, the food giant decided to install\u00a0the\u00a0Loblaws<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0brand in Quebec and leave Provigo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on the side. <\/span>After several years of rebranding Provigo<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>stores to the Loblaws<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0colors at great costs, Loblaw<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>realized its mistake,\u00a0backtracked and, in 2015, replaced all Loblaws<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>logos for Provigo<\/a><\/strong>, a brand that still enjoys\u00a0a significant\u00a0equity and a positive image in Quebec (Source: La Presse<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

In July 2013, Loblaw<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>introduced\u00a0Provigo Le March\u00e9<\/b><\/a> using the stylized “L” of Loblaws. <\/span>These stores occupy the same hypermarket niche as Metro Plus<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0IGA Extra<\/strong><\/a>. <\/span>The first Provigo Le March\u00e9<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0opened its doors in 2013 and there are more than a dozen of them today.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a number of innovative products in each of these hypermarkets including aged beef, juice bar freshly squeezed each morning, salad bar, sushi ready on demand and a wide choice of grocery products of various ethnic origins. <\/span>The cheese section offers no fewer than 400 cheeses, including 300 from Quebec, an impressive choice of imported prosciutto as well as local\u00a0p\u00e2t\u00e9s and terrines.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a hundred Provigo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and Provigo Le March\u00e9<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0supermarkets, the banner is carving a place of choice on the Quebec market. <\/span>In addition, it can rely on the excellent “President’s Choice”<\/strong> house brand\u00a0which offers great value and quality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike Sobeys<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Metro<\/a><\/strong>, Loblaw<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>relies less on independant retailers and more on the corporate store management model. <\/span>Thus, the Provigo<\/a><\/strong>, Maxi<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and others\u00a0are generally operated by Loblaw<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>managers\u00a0who do not own the goods they sell.<\/span><\/p>\n
