IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0IGA Extra<\/strong><\/a> are the two major banners of Sobeys Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in terms of supermarket power.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of American origin, IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is a well-known brand currently present in thirty countries and rooted in Quebec for decades. <\/span>It was founded in May 1926 by a hundred independent retailers in the state of New York and Connecticut who have developed a unique concept, marketing and access to a more efficient supply chain (few know also that IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>stands for Independent Grocers Alliance). <\/span>After a few years, the company began to market its own brand of canned products. <\/span>Today, the head office of the banner resides in Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Quebec, on June 1, 1953, Hudon & Orsali<\/strong> obtained from IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Chicago the exclusivity of the IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>banner for several regions of Quebec. <\/span>This association came at a time when independent grocers feel the need to regroup in order to consolidate their purchasing power and marketing in the face of the arrival of major corporate chains. IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>then became the first voluntary grouping. <\/span>In November 1953, IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>already had more than 50 grocers under its banner<\/span><\/p>\n

Today in Canada (excluding British Columbia), IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is a trademark owned by Sobeys<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>, acquired as part of its acquisition of the Oshawa Group Ltd<\/strong>., with stores\u00a0mostly based in Quebec. IGA<\/a><\/strong><\/span>‘s operations in Atlantic Canada were sold to Loblaw<\/strong><\/a> and restructured under its existing brands. <\/span>In Ontario, Sobeys<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>converted the IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>stores to another banner, Foodland<\/strong>. <\/span>However, many IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>stores are still active in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the new millennium, the IGA Extra<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0banner was born. <\/span>It offers a boutique environment comprising of a variety of products and superior customer service in larger floor areas\u00a0than IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>stores. <\/span>The appearance of the\u00a0IGA Extra<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0banner in Quebec allowed Sobeys<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to raise the bar of its supermarket shopping experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>shopping environment is particularly well-cared for and the banner places great emphasis on educating its customers\u00a0to eat well (with the following slogan: The joy\u00a0of eating better<\/strong>), hence the hiring in Quebec of three well-known foodie personalities<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

With more than 250 IGA<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and IGA Extra<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0supermarkets, the banner is the undisputed leader in Quebec in terms of supermarket market share.<\/span><\/p>\n

Type of Franchise<\/h4>\n

Like Metro<\/strong><\/a> and Metro<\/strong> Plus<\/strong><\/a>, IGA<\/strong><\/a> supermarkets are managed by independent retailers, a model that favors the consumer according to the company.<\/span> Sobeys<\/a><\/strong>, on its website, explains that “the independent retailer owns its store, has a supply contract with a distributor and responsibilities are divided between the two partners. The distributor is often responsible for negotiating with suppliers and<\/span>\u00a0for advertising, among other things, while the retailer is responsible for the day-to-day management of the store, such as purchasing and personnel management, to name just two.<\/span>\u00a0He can then better adapt its food offers to local tastes and needs\u00a0while enjoying the support of a large\u00a0player. “<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
